NRUMC COMMUNITY GARDEN
An outreach ministry of North Raleigh United Methodist Church.
ABOUT US
In Spring 2013, 26 raised beds were created by the United Methodist Men and Hearts and Hammers groups, an old well on the property was re-established and 64 cubic yards of topsoil have filled the new beds. Boy Scouts have made the garden the recipient of their Eagle Projects; building fencing to keep out the neighborhood deer, a shade shelter, and compost bins. Other volunteers have built a picnic table and patio and done so many other things to make this garden happen. In 2014, we added 8 more beds for a total of 34 and each year we donate about 5000 pounds of fresh vegetables to the hungry. Come and see what is growing!
How does the Garden Work?
Participants lease either a full, 5x20' bed @ $50.00 or half, 5x10' bed @ $25.00 and grow vegetables with the understanding that at least 50 percent of their harvest to goes to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle or Tri-Area Ministry. They also agree to participate 4 hours per year on garden work days and twice a month on a picking team from June through September and ad hoc pickings in Spring and Fall.
Currently we deliver our produce twice a week to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Tri-Area Ministry which distributes to those in need.
Not interesting in leasing a bed? We could always use volunteers to help picking and delivering the produce or mowing/edging the lawn between the beds.
